This is a top quality made in the USA gold testing stone for doing precious metal testing.

Also referred to as streak stones or touch stones, this gold test stone is made of  natural Arkansas black novaculite quarried and cut in the USA. 

The item to be tested is rubbed or scratched across the stone, and then acid (sold separately) is applied across the rubbing.  Based on the reaction of the acid to the rubbing a determination can be made by an experienced person as to the metal type.  Another way this stone can be used is by comparing a certain karat sample to an test sample.  You will need gold testing needles or gold samples that you are certain of their gold content to do this kind of testing. Rub the test needles or gold samples next to a rubbing of a test item, and compare the reaction after the acid is applied.  A similar reaction indicates a similar karat.
