The Foredom M.SR Hang-Up Flex Shaft Motor with Foot Speed Control is a versatile rotary power tool system designed for professional jewelers, metalsmiths, stone setters, and jewelry repair workshops. With a powerful 1/6 HP motor, forward and reverse rotation, and variable speeds up to 18,000 RPM, the Foredom SR supports a wide range of drilling, grinding, sanding, polishing, and metal finishing applications.
This combination features the Foredom M.SR hanging motor, a 39-inch flexible drive shaft, and a foot-operated speed controller. The motor is designed to work with interchangeable Foredom key-tip handpieces, allowing jewelers to select the appropriate handpiece for different tasks. A compatible handpiece is required for operation and is sold separately.
1/6 HP Motor for Professional Jewelry Work
The Foredom M.SR features a 1/6 horsepower universal motor designed for continuous-duty operation. It delivers rotary power through a flexible shaft, keeping the weight of the motor away from the handpiece and allowing more comfortable handling during detailed bench work.
With a maximum operating speed of 18,000 RPM, the motor supports a variety of professional jewelry applications:
- Jewelry polishing: Use compatible polishing wheels, brushes, and finishing accessories to refine metal surfaces and jewelry components.
- Grinding and shaping: Remove excess material, smooth casting marks, and refine metal edges with suitable rotary abrasives.
- Drilling: Create holes in jewelry components and other suitable materials using an appropriate handpiece and drill bit.
- Stone setting preparation: Operate compatible setting burs and cutting tools for controlled metal removal around gemstone settings.
- Jewelry repairs: Perform rotary finishing tasks on rings, pendants, bracelets, and other metal jewelry components.
- Wax and model work: Use compatible attachments for shaping and refining jewelry patterns and models.
Forward and Reverse Rotation
The M.SR motor operates in both forward and reverse directions, providing additional flexibility when working on different surfaces or approaching a component from another angle.
A directional switch on the motor allows the operator to select forward rotation, reverse rotation, or the off position. Always stop the motor completely before changing direction, and make sure the selected handpiece and rotary accessory are suitable for the intended rotation.
Reversible operation is particularly useful for certain grinding, polishing, and finishing tasks where the direction of rotation affects tool positioning and access.
Foot-Operated Variable Speed Control
The included foot-operated speed controller allows jewelers to adjust motor speed while keeping their hands available for controlling the handpiece and workpiece.
The controller features a durable plastic housing with a wide, low-profile design and non-slip pads to help keep it positioned during operation. Gradual pedal pressure provides variable speed adjustment, allowing the operator to select a suitable speed for different materials, rotary accessories, and finishing procedures.
Lower speeds can be useful for controlled detail work, while higher speeds may be appropriate for compatible grinding, cutting, and polishing attachments. Always follow the accessory manufacturer's recommended operating speed.
39-Inch Flexible Shaft and Interchangeable Handpieces
The Foredom M.SR comes with a 39-inch standard key-tip flexible shaft designed to connect to compatible Foredom interchangeable handpieces. This arrangement allows the motor to be suspended above the workbench while the operator works with a smaller handheld tool.
The quick-disconnect key-tip connection makes it possible to switch between compatible handpieces for different jewelry applications without replacing the motor.
Examples of compatible handpiece options include:
- Foredom H.30: A general-purpose chuck-style handpiece suitable for a wide range of drilling, grinding, and polishing accessories.
- Foredom H.20: A quick-change handpiece designed for accessories with 3/32-inch (2.35 mm) shanks, particularly useful for jewelry setting work and frequent bur changes.
Handpieces are purchased separately. Check the connection type and accessory shank requirements before selecting a handpiece for your workshop.

Installation and Maintenance
The hanging motor design helps keep the workbench clear and allows the flexible shaft to reach the working area. Foredom recommends positioning the motor approximately 30–40 inches above the work surface and securing it to a suitable hanger equipped with a safety retaining mechanism.
To help maintain proper performance:
- Keep the flexible shaft free from sharp bends and excessive twisting.
- Lubricate and inspect the flexible shaft according to Foredom's maintenance instructions.
- Check handpiece compatibility before connecting or replacing attachments.
- Allow the motor to stop completely before changing rotation direction.
- Use appropriate eye protection and control jewelry dust and debris during rotary operations.
- Confirm that the motor and speed controller have matching electrical ratings before connecting them to power.
Regular maintenance of the flexible shaft, motor brushes, and other serviceable components helps support reliable operation over time.
