Calibration and Testing Procedure

For dependable operation, the AGT3 must be calibrated each time it is powered on or when the pen probe is replaced. Calibration requires a known, non-plated 14K or 18K yellow gold sample with a freshly prepared surface. Calibration samples are not included.

Before testing, the manufacturer recommends filing a small, inconspicuous area of the metal to expose the material beneath any surface plating or contamination. Place the item on the testing plate and gently touch the pen probe to the prepared area according to the operating instructions.

Correct calibration, consistent probe contact, and clean, dry testing surfaces are essential for reliable readings. The pen probe contains a proprietary saline solution and does not require traditional gold testing acids.

Important Testing Limitations

The AuRACLE AGT3 is intended for practical gold and platinum evaluation rather than laboratory-grade metal composition analysis. Because it measures the exposed surface, gold-plated and gold-filled items may produce misleading readings if the underlying metal is not properly exposed before testing. Filing can leave a visible mark on the item.

Results may also be affected by rhodium plating, palladium, unusual gold alloy compositions, surface contamination, and improper calibration. Higher-karat gold can be more challenging to distinguish accurately. The AGT3 is not a dedicated palladium tester and should not be used as the sole method of authenticating branded jewelry or watches.
